What is Muwasat?

Muwasat Association Community Support Group is a Canadian Muslim community mutual aid program, established in March 2021. Members pool their resources to ease the financial burden of funeral and burial costs for bereaved families. Muwasat is a registered Canadian Not-for-Profit Corporation incorporated in Ontario.

Is Muwasat an insurance plan?

No. Muwasat is a voluntary mutual aid program — not an insurance plan. Members do not pay premiums in exchange for guaranteed payouts. Each member contributes when a covered death occurs in the community, and benefits are limited to what is collected and to the terms in the Policy and Membership Agreement.

Is Muwasat a registered charity? Are my contributions tax-deductible?

No to both. Muwasat is a registered Canadian Not-for-Profit Corporation, but it is NOT a registered charity with the Canada Revenue Agency. We do not issue official donation tax receipts, and your contributions are not tax-deductible.

Who can join Muwasat?

Any individual living in Canada who agrees to the Muwasat Policy and Membership Agreement may apply. Membership is organized by family unit — one principal member enrols on behalf of their household. Visit the How It Works page to learn more about eligible family members.

How much does it cost to join?

Accepted Answer

A one-time, non-refundable registration fee of $200 CAD is paid at the time of joining. After that, members contribute $50 CAD per funeral event whenever a covered death occurs in the community.

Is there a waiting period?

Accepted Answer

Yes — three full calendar months from the date your first payment is received. During this time, you contribute to others' needs but cannot claim benefits yourself.

Who is covered under my membership?

Accepted Answer

The principal member, their spouse, unmarried children living at home, and the principal member's parents or parents-in-law if those parents live permanently with the family in Canada. All covered individuals must be listed on the application form.

What if a covered family member's situation changes — e.g., my child gets married, or my parent moves abroad?

Members are required to inform Muwasat promptly so the coverage can be adjusted. An individual who no longer qualifies as a dependent would need to apply for their own separate membership to remain covered.

Can I get a refund if I leave Muwasat?

No. The registration fee and all past contributions are non-refundable.

Question 10

If I leave and later want to rejoin, what happens?

You will need to re-apply as a new member, pay the registration fee again, and serve a new three-month waiting period.

What is the maximum benefit?

Accepted Answer

Up to $10,000 CAD per case, regardless of actual funeral cost. If costs exceed $10,000, the family covers the difference. If costs are lower, the surplus is donated by Muwasat toward the construction of new masajid in Canada.

Who actually performs the funeral services?

Accepted Answer

In the Greater Toronto Area, Muwasat partners with licensed Islamic funeral providers — ISNA Funeral Services, Halton Islamic Association, Taalim-ul-Islam, Hamilton Mosque, and others — who deliver Ghusl, kafan, transportation, burial coordination, and all related services in accordance with Islamic tradition and provincial law. Outside the GTA, the family arranges services with their nearest mosque or licensed funeral provider, and Muwasat reimburses approved invoices.

How do I notify Muwasat of a death?

What does Muwasat NOT cover?

Accepted Answer

Deaths outside Canada are not automatically covered (the Board may consider exceptional cases). Repatriation of remains, costs above $10,000, family travel, post-funeral gatherings, and benefits for members still in their waiting period or in suspended status are not covered. What if a visiting parent passes away while in Canada?

Muwasat may, at the Board's discretion, extend support if the visiting parent will be buried in Canada — same $10,000 cap applies. This is a compassionate exception and not automatic; the Board's decision is final. No support is provided for repatriation abroad.

Do volunteers handle the body?

Accepted Answer

No. Volunteers handle administrative tasks and janazah event coordination only. Ghusl, transportation, and all clinical services are provided by Muwasat's licensed Islamic funeral partners.
