How Muwasat Works

A simple, transparent program built on community support.

The Four-Step Membership Journey

1

Join Muwasat

Complete the membership application, list your eligible family members (spouse, unmarried children living at home, and parents or parents-in-law living permanently with you in Canada), and pay the one-time $200 CAD registration fee. Read and sign the Policy and Membership Agreement.

2

Three-Month Waiting Period

A three-month initial waiting period applies to all new memberships. During this time, you contribute to others' needs when a death occurs in the community — but you are not yet eligible to receive benefits yourself. The waiting period exists to keep the program fair and sustainable for all members.

3

Contribute When a Death Occurs

When Muwasat notifies the membership of a covered death, every active member in good standing contributes $50 CAD by the deadline communicated. This shared contribution model means no single family ever carries the burden alone.

4

Receive Support When You Need It

After your waiting period ends, you and your registered dependents are covered. In the event of a loss, call our death-notification numbers immediately — and Muwasat coordinates the rest, paying directly to our partner funeral provider in the GTA or reimbursing approved invoices outside the GTA, up to $10,000 CAD.

The Money — Plainly

$200 CAD — One-time, non-refundable registration fee paid at the time of joining.

$50 CAD — Per-event contribution. Paid by every active member each time a covered death is announced.

$10,000 CAD — Maximum benefit per case. If actual costs are lower, the surplus is donated by Muwasat toward the construction of new masajid in Canada.

There are no monthly fees, no recurring premiums, and no payouts beyond actual funeral costs covered up to the cap. Muwasat is a mutual aid program — not an insurance plan.

Who's Eligible to Join

Any individual living in Canada who agrees to the Policy and Membership Agreement may apply for membership. Membership is organized by family unit — one principal member enrols on behalf of their household.

Covered family members must be listed on the application:

  • The principal member
  • Spouse
  • Unmarried children living at home and not financially independent
  • Parents or parents-in-law of the principal member, if they live permanently with the family in Canada

Family members who do not meet these criteria — for example, adult children who are married or living independently — are not automatically covered and would need to apply for their own separate membership.

Important: at the time of application, none of the listed individuals may be in a critical medical condition or hospitalized.

What's Not Covered

  • Deaths occurring outside Canada are not automatically covered. The Board may consider exceptional cases on a goodwill basis.
  • Repatriation of remains from abroad is generally not covered.
  • Costs beyond the $10,000 CAD per-case cap remain the responsibility of the family.
  • Non-funeral expenses such as travel to attend a funeral or post-funeral gatherings.
  • Benefits for any member or dependent who is still within the three-month waiting period, or whose membership is suspended for non-payment.

Full details are in the Policy and Membership Agreement.
