Membership Terms — Plain Language Summary

This page summarizes the Muwasat Policy and Membership Agreement in plain English. The full Agreement is the legally binding document and is available below as a PDF.

The Twelve Things You Need to Know

1. Muwasat is a mutual aid program, not insurance.

Members pool resources to support bereaved families. There are no premiums, and no guaranteed payouts beyond what the community contributes.

2. Joining costs $200 CAD, one time.

This registration fee is non-refundable.

3. When a covered death occurs, each active member contributes $50 CAD.

You will be notified by Muwasat with the deadline for each contribution.

4. The maximum benefit is $10,000 CAD per case.

Anything above this is the family's responsibility. Anything below it is donated by Muwasat toward the construction of new masajid in Canada.

5. There is a 3-month initial waiting period.

You contribute during this period but cannot receive benefits until it ends.

6. Membership covers a defined family unit.

Principal member, spouse, unmarried children at home, and parents or parents-in-law living permanently with you in Canada. Married or independent adult children are not covered and would need their own membership.

7. You must keep your information up to date.

If a covered dependent's situation changes (marriage, moving abroad, etc.), inform Muwasat promptly.

8. At the time of joining, no one to be covered may be in a critical medical condition or hospitalized.

This declaration must be truthful. Falsifying information may result in loss of membership and denial of benefits.

9. Late or missed contributions can result in suspension or termination.

You will receive a reminder first. Continued non-payment may end your membership and disqualify you from benefits.

10. Deaths outside Canada are not automatically covered.

The Board may consider exceptional cases. Repatriation of remains is generally not covered.

11. Muwasat is a Canadian Not-for-Profit, not a registered charity.

Your contributions are not tax-deductible.

12. The Board's good-faith decisions are final.

Members may submit written appeals, but the Board's decision on appeal is the final word in the administration of the program.
